Design, optimization, and testing of a high-speed centrifugal pump for motorsport application

Centrifugal pumps are designed to have their BEP (Best Efficiency Point) for a given flow rate, hydraulic head, and speed. In the design phase, those parameters combined into dimensionless specific speed used define geometry of pump. this paper, downsized centrifugal pump has been high efficiency at very speeds (10000 – 15000 RPM), as requested by cooling circuit an engine motorsport racing applications. The point was 13 L/min 3.0 bar 12000 RPM, while impeller external diameter is 34 mm. A mathematical model realized optimize in early phase through iterative process, based on 0D procedure which generates optimal both volute. Hence, estimates main losses and, thus, hydraulic, volumetric, organic efficiency. Once generated, performance verified working detailed CFD analysis. Physical phenomena that occur when running simulated, represent closely possible vein fluid detachments, cavitation, backflow clearances between casing. At last, prototype built experimentally characterized dynamic test bench able reproduce characteristic curves (hydraulic head efficiency) revolution well performances real time-varying operational conditions.
